The Skinny: Despite playing well in some past tournaments, don’t expect Panama to light the world on fire at the Copa America this year.
Panama should handily take down Bolivia, but don’t have the quality to compete with teams like Argentina and Chile.
The Panamanian team features veteran defender Felipe Baloy of Atlas anchoring a back line that will have to try and keep up with Alexis Sanchez, Sergio Aguero, Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain. The defense will have to attempt this without Seattle Sounder Roman Torres on the line, as he is out with injury.
The midfield for Panama features two San Jose Earthquakes teammates in Alberto Quintero and Anibal Godoy. If Panama want to make any waves in the tournament this year, Godoy will have to perform well.
Quintero and Godoy will be charged with providing service to veteran striker Blas Perez of the Vancouver Whitecaps. “Super Raton” (Spanish for Mighty Mouse), as he is affectionately dubbed, has already found the back of the net twice for Vancouver this season. When he scores, Perez likes to honor his father, who was known as “The Bull” by making horns on his head. Panama will hope to see those horns early and often, otherwise it could be a long tournament for them.
